Sweets in Coupar Angus: A Market Town Built From Abbey Stone

Coupar Angus owes its name, its layout, and quite literally some of its stonework to a medieval abbey that no longer stands.

A Cistercian abbey on the Isla

A Cistercian abbey was founded on the banks of the River Isla around 1164, and for centuries it was one of the most important religious houses in the area. It was largely destroyed by a mob at the start of the Reformation in 1559, and formally wound up on the death of its last monk in 1606 — today only part of the gateway survives.

From ruin to market town

The abbey's stonework became a convenient quarry for the growing settlement around it, and Coupar Angus was made a burgh with the right to hold a market in 1607. The Tolbooth Tower, built in 1702, and a linen trade that took hold through the 18th century, carried the town through into the railway age.

Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else

Coupar Angus's history is built on abbeys and the linen trade, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of Perthshire and the UK.
