Sweets in Crickhowell: Wales' Longest Stone Bridge

Crickhowell sits in the Usk Valley beneath Table Mountain, and the bridge that carries the town's name across the river is reckoned to be the longest stone bridge anywhere in Wales.

A bridge rebuilt in stone

A timber bridge is recorded at Crickhowell as far back as 1538, but the current structure dates from 1706, when it was rebuilt in stone with multiple arches at a cost of £400. Flooding destroyed it in 1808, and when it was repaired and widened in 1810, the work was only added to one side of the bridge.

Twelve arches one way, thirteen the other

That lopsided repair is why Crickhowell Bridge has twelve arches when viewed from upstream and thirteen from downstream — a quirk that, along with its length of over 128 metres, helped earn it Grade I listed status and Scheduled Monument protection.

Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else

Crickhowell's history is built on stone and river crossings, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of Powys and the UK.
