Crook spent its early years as a sleepy farming hamlet — then coal was found close to the surface, and the town was transformed within a generation.
From farming hamlet to coalfield
Crook first appeared as an agricultural village around 1795, serving the local farming community with little more than an inn and a blacksmith's shop. Forty years later it had become a mining village, as coal close to the surface drew in industry, and soon more than 20 mines were operating in the area.
A population that grew sevenfold
The arrival of a Stockton and Darlington Railway branch line helped Crook's population grow sevenfold between 1841 and 1851. The town thrived through the rest of the 19th century, before the last pits and the railway closed in the 1960s.
