Sweets in Cumbernauld: Britain's First Covered Shopping Mall

Cumbernauld's population is around 52,000, making it the largest town in North Lanarkshire — and, as a New Town designated in December 1955, one of Scotland's more deliberately planned communities.

Britain's First Covered Shopping Mall

The Centre Cumbernauld opened in May 1967 as one of the world's earliest covered, multi-level shopping centres, designed by architect Geoffrey Copcutt as a flagship piece of post-war urban planning. It was expanded in June 2007 with the addition of the Antonine Centre, which added around 350,000 sq ft of retail space, including a 100,000 sq ft Tesco Extra. The complex even incorporates the historic clock from Glasgow's old St Enoch railway station, made famous by the 1981 film Gregory's Girl.

A Landmark Building, Not a Sweet Specialist

For all its architectural notoriety, the centre is built around supermarkets and chain retail rather than an independent sweet shop — there's no walk-in option for a bulk bag or a trade case among its stores.

What a New Town Centre Doesn't Cover

Cumbernauld's retail core was planned around convenience shopping for a growing town, not vegan-specific or halal-friendly ranges put together for a business or event.
