Sweets in Dalkeith: Palace of 1711, Bonnie Prince Charlie

Dalkeith's great landmark is its palace, completed in 1711 and regarded as one of the grandest early classical houses in Scotland.

A palace on a castle site

The present Dalkeith Palace was built between 1701 and 1711 for Anna, 1st Duchess of Buccleuch, to a design by architect James Smith, on the site of an earlier fortified castle. It was the seat of the Dukes of Buccleuch from 1642 until 1914.

Royal and princely guests

Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed at Dalkeith in 1745, King George IV slept there during his 1822 visit to Edinburgh, and Queen Victoria visited in 1842. Today the grounds are open as Dalkeith Country Park.
