Darwen Tower, on the hill above the town, opened to the public on 24 September 1898 — built to mark Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee and the townspeople's victory in winning access to the moors.
A fight over the paths
In the 1870s the lord of the manor, the Reverend William Arthur Duckworth, blocked paths across the moor to protect game-shooting rights. After a long campaign of lawsuits and negotiation, rights of access were transferred to Darwen Corporation in 1896.
An octagonal tower on the hill
The octagonal tower stands 85 feet high on Darwen Hill, around 1,220 feet above sea level, and the first sod was cut by the mayor, Alexander Carus, on 22 June 1897.
