Sweets in Downpatrick: Down Cathedral and St Patrick's Hill

Downpatrick's population is around 11,500, and it's one of the few towns in the UK that claims to be the final resting place of a saint.

Down Cathedral, and St Patrick's Grave

A cathedral has stood on Cathedral Hill in Downpatrick since the 12th century, when the Anglo-Norman knight John de Courcy established a Benedictine order there in 1177 after ousting the last King of the Dal Fiatach. Tradition holds that St Patrick was buried on the hill, and a large granite marker was added in the early 1900s to protect the grave from pilgrims who'd been known to take handfuls of earth home with them.

The Saint Patrick Centre

Downpatrick is also home to the Saint Patrick Centre, a £6.3 million exhibition complex that opened in 2001 as the only permanent visitor centre in the world dedicated to the saint. Plenty of history in one small town — just not a sweet-shop tradition to go with it.
