Dromore takes its name from the Irish for 'large ridge', and its skyline is still dominated by a Norman earthwork that predates the town by centuries.
A Norman stronghold on the Lagan
Dromore's best-known landmark is a well-preserved Norman motte and bailey, built by John de Courcy in the early 13th century shortly after the Norman invasion of Ireland. The town remained under Anglo-Norman control until it was captured and destroyed by Edward Bruce during the Irish-Bruce wars of 1315.
A cathedral rebuilt by Jeremy Taylor
Dromore was the seat of its own diocese, which grew out of a 6th-century abbey attributed to Saint Colman. The town and its cathedral were destroyed again during the Irish Rebellion of 1641, and the present church was rebuilt in 1661 by Bishop Jeremy Taylor, who is buried there.
