A merchant's mansion starts a resort
The turnaround began in 1822, when Glasgow merchant James Ewing built a large mansion above the shore, and the town grew quickly after that as steamship tourism took off on the Firth of Clyde. Dunoon became a favourite retreat for wealthy Glaswegians, and later a holiday resort within reach of ordinary working families too.
A pier that outlasted the paddle steamers
Dunoon Pier, with sections dating back to 1835 and completed in its current form in 1898, is now a Category A listed structure and rated by Historic Environment Scotland as the best-surviving timber ferry pier in Scotland. Paddle steamers brought holidaymakers across from Glasgow right up until the late 1960s.
