Dunstable became a town by order of Henry I in 1106, planted at the crossing of two of England's oldest routes.
Where two ancient roads met
The town sits where the Roman Watling Street crossed the ancient Icknield Way, which is why a royal town was founded on the spot. Henry I also established a community of Augustinian canons there, who ran the town and collected taxes for the Crown.
A priory with a place in royal history
Dunstable Priory was founded in 1132, and it was from the priory that the annulment of the marriage of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon was pronounced in 1533. Just outside town, Dunstable Downs and the Whipsnade estate add chalk hills and open countryside.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Dunstable's history is built on roads and a priory, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of Bedfordshire and the UK.
