Sweets in Eccles: James Birch, and 230 Years of the Eccles Cake

Eccles' population reached 41,122 at the 2021 census, an 11.5% rise on 2011, making it one of the fastest-growing town centres in the City of Salford.

The birthplace of the Eccles cake

Eccles gave its name to one of Britain's most exported bakes. James Birch is generally credited as the first person to sell Eccles cakes commercially, from a shop in the town centre in 1793 — a small, flaky pastry packed with currants and spice, with roots going back further still to the Eccles Wakes festivals held around the parish church of St Mary. By 1818, Eccles cakes were already being shipped to the West Indies and the United States, and an 1838 railway guide summed the town up in one line: 'This place is famous for its cakes.'

The name was never protected by geographical status, so Eccles cakes are made all over the country now — but the association has stuck for well over two centuries, and it's still the thing most people know Eccles for.

What Eccles cake fame doesn't cover

A famous pastry and a market-town centre are two different things from a bulk sweets order — Eccles' bakeries and general shops are built around a cake sold by the piece, not a 3kg bulk bag, a vegan-specific range, or a halal-friendly selection ready for a business.

Why Eccles shoppers order online anyway

For anything past a bakery-counter quantity, ordering online and having it delivered is the more consistent option — no trip into the town centre required, and no limit on how much you're buying at once.
