Elgin Cathedral, founded in 1224, was known as the "Lantern of the North" for its size and beauty. In 1390, Alexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan — a son of King Robert II better remembered by his nickname, the Wolf of Badenoch — burned the cathedral and much of the town after falling out with the Bishop of Moray. The building was patched up over the following century but never fully recovered, and its roofless walls still stand in the centre of town today.
