Eltham Palace
From the 14th century, Eltham Palace was large enough to house the entire royal court, complete with a great hall, a moat and lodgings for hundreds of staff. Henry VIII spent much of his boyhood there and, as king, added a tiltyard and a pleasure garden; it was at Eltham in 1525 that Cardinal Wolsey drew up the Ordinances of Eltham to curb waste in the royal household. As Henry increasingly favoured Greenwich and Hampton Court for their river access, Eltham fell out of royal use — the site later passed to a wealthy 1930s couple who built an Art Deco mansion onto the medieval remains, an unusual combination now run by English Heritage.
