On 4 August 1265, the fields just outside Evesham were the scene of one of medieval England's most decisive battles. Forces loyal to Prince Edward (later Edward I) trapped and defeated the baronial army led by Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester, who was killed in the fighting along with many of his supporters. The Battle of Evesham effectively ended the Second Barons' War and restored royal authority to Henry III, though de Montfort's earlier reforms are still credited by historians as an important step toward representative parliament. Centuries later, the Vale of Evesham became one of England's most productive fruit and market-garden regions, with local growing traditions dating back to the market gardens first established by Evesham's Benedictine abbey.
