Eyemouth is a working fishing harbour on the Berwickshire coast, and its history is marked by the single worst day the Scottish fishing industry has known.
Black Friday, 14 October 1881
A storm that had been forecast by a very low barometric pressure struck the fishing fleet without warning on 14 October 1881. Because tradition held that if one boat sailed, the whole fleet was honour-bound to follow, Eyemouth's boats went out together — and 129 of the town's men were drowned that day, out of 189 lost along the coast.
A town that took generations to recover
The disaster left 93 women widowed and 267 children without fathers, and it's said Eyemouth took around 80 years to recover economically from the loss. The town still marks the anniversary, and the fishing fleet remains part of daily life in the harbour.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Eyemouth's history is built on fishing, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of the Scottish Borders and the UK.
