Falmouth's Pendennis Castle was built between 1539 and 1545 on the orders of Henry VIII, and it has guarded the harbour ever since.
A fortress against invasion
Henry VIII ordered Pendennis Castle built because he feared invasion by French and Spanish fleets after his break with the Catholic Church. It stands on a promontory at the mouth of the Carrick Roads, one of the biggest natural anchorages anywhere.
Two castles, one anchorage
Together with the fortress at St Mawes across the water, Pendennis guarded the anchorage of Carrick Roads and the port towns below it for over 400 years.
