Fleetwood is one of the few English seaside towns that was planned from nothing, laid out on open land rather than growing up around an existing village.
A town planned from scratch
Fleetwood was conceived by Sir Peter Hesketh, who owned the land at the northern tip of the Fylde peninsula and set out to build an entirely new town and port there. When Hesketh ran into financial trouble before the plan was finished, the architect Decimus Burton was brought in to complete it, making Fleetwood one of the first planned towns of the Victorian era.
Two lighthouses, lit on the same night
Burton, working with Captain H. M. Denham, designed two lighthouses to guide ships into the new harbour: the Pharos, or Upper Light, and the Beach Light, or Lower Light, built in an unusual neoclassical style with a square colonnaded base. Both were first lit on 1 December 1840, using the town's own gas supply, and together they gave ships a "leading line" into the channel after dark.
