The castle tower that became a lighthouse
In 1787, engineer Thomas Smith converted the 16th-century Kinnaird Castle tower at Fraserburgh into Scotland's first mainland lighthouse, working on behalf of the newly formed Northern Lighthouse Board. Smith would go on to mentor his stepson Robert Stevenson, founder of the Stevenson family of lighthouse engineers. The tower still stands at Kinnaird Head and now houses the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses.
