Freuchie is a small village at the foot of the Lomond Hills in Fife, a few miles from Falkland — and in 1985, it became the unlikeliest name in Scottish sporting history.
The village that beat Lord's
Freuchie Cricket Club was formed in 1908 and has played at Freuchie Park ever since. In 1985, a squad that included builders, a forklift driver and a plumber won the final of the National Village Cup at Lord's, beating a Surrey side from Rowledge and becoming the first team from north of the border to take the title. More than 3,000 fans travelled down to London to watch, and the club later planted thirteen trees at Freuchie Primary School, one for each player, to mark the win.
A village with no sweet shop of its own
Freuchie's history also includes a darker footnote — it was once used by the royal court at nearby Falkland Palace as a place of banishment. What it hasn't had is a dedicated sweet shop; the village's trade has always been small and local.
Why Freuchie still gets its sweets by delivery
