Garstang has been a market town since the early 1300s, but it's a vote taken in the year 2000 that put it on the map worldwide.
A market going back to the 1300s
Garstang appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 under the name Cherestanc, and its Thursday market has run since the early 14th century, stretching the length of the main street much as it still does today.
The world's first Fairtrade Town
In April 2000, at a public town meeting, the people of Garstang voted to declare it the world's first Fairtrade Town — a campaign driven by local Oxfam supporter Bruce Crowther and the Garstang Oxfam Group. Awareness of the Fairtrade Mark in the town jumped sharply within months, and in November 2001 Tony Robinson unveiled a plaque to mark the achievement. The idea went on to inspire Fairtrade Town campaigns in towns and cities around the world.
