Sweets in Glastonbury: 14th-Century Tower on the Tor

Glastonbury's skyline is defined by the Tor, and the tower on top of it is a genuine survivor from the 14th century.

A tower that outlived its church

St Michael's Tower is all that remains of the 14th-century church of St Michael. An earlier wooden church on the hill was destroyed by an earthquake in 1275, and the stone church that replaced it is long gone, leaving only the tower, with some carvings that hint at how it was once decorated.

An abbey with a long history

Glastonbury Abbey, near the foot of the Tor, is believed to be the site of the earliest Christian church in Britain. The last abbot, Richard Whiting, was executed on the Tor in 1539 during the Dissolution, and the Tor itself has been looked after by the National Trust since 1933.
