Glenrothes was designated in 1948 as one of Scotland's first post-war "new towns", built to house families and workers from Fife's coalfields — and from the outset, the plan included more public art per resident than almost anywhere else in the country.
The Kingdom Centre
Glenrothes town centre is built around the Kingdom Centre, which opened in 1963 and remains Fife's largest indoor shopping centre — around 120 shop units under one roof, covering roughly 36,000 square metres. It's a solid stop for general retail, but there's no dedicated sweet specialist among its stores.
A New Town Built on Public Art
What sets Glenrothes apart from most planned towns is its Town Art Trail — more than 170 public artworks scattered through the streets and parks, from a family of fibreglass hippos to giant mushrooms and a ring of carved concrete standing stones. It's an unusual thing to find in a town built from scratch in the 1950s and 60s, and it's still one of the first things locals mention.
What a Shopping Centre Doesn't Stock
120 shops sounds like plenty, but bulk bags, vegan-specific ranges and halal-friendly sweets aren't what a general-retail centre like the Kingdom Centre is set up to carry — that's a gap that tends to send Glenrothes shoppers online instead.
