Sweets in Goole: An Inland Port Built in the 1820s, and Still Known as Dock Town

Goole, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, had a population of around 19,000 at the 2021 census — an inland port town that didn't really exist before the 19th century.

An inland port built from nothing

Before the 1820s, Goole was little more than a hamlet on the Ouse. That changed when the Aire and Calder Navigation Company, looking for a more efficient way to move West Yorkshire coal and goods to the sea, chose the site to build a purpose-made port, with docks opening in 1826. The town grew up almost entirely around those docks, laid out with a planned grid of streets to house dock and shipyard workers, and for two centuries the port has stayed central to the local economy, still handling cargo in and out of the Humber estuary. The nickname 'Dock Town' has stuck for exactly that reason.

What that history doesn't leave behind

Goole's history is one of docks, shipping and warehousing, not confectionery, and a working port town of this size has never had a dedicated sweet shop stocking bulk bags, vegan ranges or halal-friendly lines.
