Gourock is a town of around 10,000 people on the Firth of Clyde, its name coming from a Gaelic word for 'rounded hill' — and its history is tied almost entirely to the water in front of it.
From herring curing to "doon the watter"
Gourock's early economy ran on herring curing, copper mining, ropemaking and quarrying, before the railway's arrival in 1889 turned it into a favourite seaside resort for Glaswegians heading 'doon the watter' for their holidays through the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The 1909 open-air swimming pool, built to resemble an ocean liner when viewed from the river, is one of the few survivors of that era — the Bay Hotel, Cragburn Pavilion and the Ashton pavilion are all long gone.
Still a ferry town
Today Gourock's pierhead remains a working ferry terminal: Caledonian MacBrayne sails to Dunoon, and a seasonal passenger ferry runs to Kilcreggan and Helensburgh. The mile-long Esplanade is the town's main promenade.
