Until the railway arrived in 1857, Grange-over-Sands was little more than a huddle of fishermen's cottages — yet it became one of the most fashionable Victorian seaside resorts in the north almost overnight, eventually earning the nickname the Torquay of the North.
From fishing hamlet to fashionable resort
The railway's arrival in 1857 brought an influx of visitors drawn by the town's mild climate, and large hotels, spa hydros and ornamental parks followed in rapid succession. Many of the hotels offered hydropathic treatments, drawing wealthy industrialists from Lancashire and Yorkshire who built holiday homes in the town.
A Promenade built in 1902
The town's long, curving Promenade was built in 1902 with the support of local benefactor Henry Porritt, running from Blawith Point to the Victorian railway station with sweeping views across the sand and saltmarsh of Morecambe Bay. It also served a practical purpose, hiding the new town sewer beneath its flower-bordered walkway.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Grange-over-Sands' history is built on hydros and a Victorian Promenade, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of Cumbria and the UK.
