Grantown-on-Spey didn't grow up by accident. It was drawn up on a map in 1765, before a single building existed, as a deliberate piece of Highland town planning.
A town built to a plan, not grown by chance
Sir James Grant, Chief of Clan Grant, founded Grantown-on-Spey in 1765 as a model settlement intended to bring progress and prosperity to the Highlands. The Square and High Street were laid out on the open moor of Freuchie, and plots were made available to suitable applicants — a planning exercise that's left the town with some of the finest and best-preserved Georgian and Victorian architecture of its kind in Scotland.
Linen, not confectionery
The original plan centred the town's economy on the linen trade, with a linen manufactory and a brewery set up in the early years, although neither lasted long. Grantown went on to become the largest and most vibrant town in Strathspey, a position only later overtaken by the growth of nearby Aviemore.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Grantown-on-Spey's history is built on planned streets and linen, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of Speyside and the UK.
