Guisborough's skyline has been defined by the same ruined priory arch for nearly 500 years — a landmark that outlasted the priory itself by centuries.
Founded by an ancestor of Robert the Bruce
Gisborough Priory was founded around 1119 by the Norman lord Robert I de Brus, an ancestor of Robert Bruce, King of Scotland. By the time of its suppression by Henry VIII in 1539, it was the fourth richest religious house in Yorkshire.
Rebuilt after fire, and still standing
The priory was rebuilt on a grand scale at the end of the 12th century and again after a catastrophic fire in 1289, recorded in detail by the priory's own canon, Walter of Guisborough. The east end of the church, with its great window forming a distinctive arch, was left standing after the dissolution and remains the town's best-known landmark.
