A church has stood in Gullane since the ninth century, and the ruined 12th-century Old Church of St Andrew still stands at the village's western edge, abandoned after sandstorms made it unusable. Golf here predates any formal club: local weavers from Gullane, Dirleton and Aberlady are recorded playing an annual match over the links as far back as 1650. The East Lothian Club, formed by local farmers in 1859, became Gullane Golf Club in 1882, which now runs three courses. Next door is Muirfield, one of the courses to have hosted The Open Championship.
