Mackintosh's, and how Halifax became Toffee Town
In 1890, newlyweds John and Violet Mackintosh bought a small pastry shop in Halifax with £100 of joint savings. Violet, who'd trained as a confectioner's assistant, developed a toffee that blended brittle English butterscotch with soft American caramel — sold as Mackintosh's Celebrated Toffee, it proved successful enough that the business had expanded well beyond Halifax by 1894. The town became known as Toffee Town as the headquarters of the growing confectionery firm.
The original shop is long gone, and Mackintosh's itself was absorbed into a much larger multinational business generations ago. Halifax's Borough Market — a Victorian building opened in 1896 with a striking 60-foot glass dome — is the closest thing left to a single retail landmark, and it's a general market, not a toffee counter.
