Hatfield House has stood at the centre of the town since the early 17th century, but its grounds include something older still: the Old Palace, built in the 1480s and the childhood home of Elizabeth I, now reckoned one of the best-preserved Tudor buildings anywhere in Hertfordshire. It's the reason Old Hatfield, the historic village beside the House, still draws visitors past the newer town centre a mile or so away.
Old Hatfield keeps its own market tradition too — a farmers' market in Salisbury Square run in partnership with The Hertfordshire Barrow Boy, a fourth-generation family business with more than 75 years of trading behind it, alongside a separate stallholder market in the Stable Yard. Hatfield's newer town centre runs its own general market on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
