Sweets in Haverfordwest: Norman Castle, County Town

Haverfordwest grew up around a Norman castle built on a hill above the Western Cleddau river, and it's been Pembrokeshire's administrative centre for nearly 500 years.

A castle with a royal past

Haverfordwest Castle was established in Norman times, with the motte-and-bailey fortress built to defend a naturally strong position above the river and much of the surviving stonework dating to around 1290. Henry VIII granted the castle to Anne Boleyn in 1532, four years before her execution, and Oliver Cromwell later ordered it slighted in 1648 so it couldn't be used again militarily.

County town status since 1543

The Second Act of Union in 1543 confirmed Haverfordwest as both a town and county in its own right, making it Pembrokeshire's administrative and commercial centre — a status the town has held ever since, with the old castle gaol now home to Haverfordwest Town Museum.
