Helmsdale is a village of around 750-800 people on Scotland's north-east coast, planned in 1814 to resettle families displaced by the Highland Clearances.
A harbour built for herring, and a gold rush up the glen
Helmsdale's harbour, built from 1818 and extended in 1823 and 1892, was once home port to more than 200 herring boats. A few miles up the valley, gold was found in Strath Kildonan, credited to Robert Nelson Gilchrist, who prospected the Helmsdale River's burns and tributaries after returning from the Australian goldfields. Word spread fast: by spring 1869, around 600 prospectors had arrived to pan the Kildonan and Suisgill burns, despite the nearest railway stopping 30 miles south at Golspie. Visitors can still pan for gold at Baile an Òr today, and the local Timespan museum covers both the herring industry and the gold rush.
A village without a sweet shop
Between the harbour and the gold panning, Helmsdale's shops are built for a small fishing and tourist community, not bulk confectionery.
