Hexham Abbey's history starts in 674 AD, when St Wilfrid, Bishop of York, founded a monastery on the site. What survives from that period is the crypt, built largely from dressed masonry salvaged from the abandoned Roman fort at Corbridge a few miles away — complete with carved Roman inscriptions still visible in the stonework. The abbey above ground was rebuilt many times over the following centuries, most substantially in the 12th and 13th centuries after being sacked by Scottish raiders, but the Anglo-Saxon crypt beneath it has survived largely intact, making it one of the oldest structures still standing in Northumberland.
