Hillsborough takes its name from the fort built on the hill above the village in the 1600s, and that fort is still standing — with a royal charter to prove its status.
A fort that became royal
Hillsborough takes its name from Sir Moses Hill and his son Arthur Hill, who built Hillsborough Fort around 1650 to guard the road from Dublin to Carrickfergus. On 21 December 1660, King Charles II granted the fort a Royal Charter, raising it to the status of a Royal Fort — a title the village still carries today as Royal Hillsborough.
A king's stopover on the way to the Boyne
William of Orange stayed at Hillsborough Fort for several nights in June 1690 on his way south to the Battle of the Boyne, and it was here that he signed the Regium Donum, granting money to Presbyterian ministers in Ireland.
