Hitchin's lavender fields can be traced back to the early 1500s, when the town became one of two major lavender producers in England.
A pharmacist, a lavender crop and a famous name
In the 1760s pharmacist Harry Perks took over an apothecary in the town, and his son Edward began growing lavender commercially in the surrounding area. In the late 19th century Samuel Perks went into partnership with Charles Llewellyn, and as Perks and Llewellyn they built a countrywide reputation for lavender water, soaps and other products.
A market town for the surrounding farmland
Hitchin's economy was historically that of a market town serving the arable farmland around it, with a corn market that has run for more than 300 years. At its peak there were over 100 acres of lavender grown around the town.
