Holyhead has been Wales's gateway to Ireland for centuries, and the structure that makes its harbour possible is a Victorian engineering landmark in its own right.
The longest breakwater in Britain
Construction of Holyhead Breakwater began in 1847, employing around 1,300 workers and consuming more than seven million tonnes of stone quarried from nearby Holyhead Mountain. At 1.71 miles (2.75km) long, it remains the longest breakwater in the United Kingdom, finally completed and opened by the Prince of Wales in August 1873.
A ferry route two centuries old
Holyhead has served as north Wales's main port for sailing to Ireland since at least the 17th century. Steam ships began carrying mail and passengers to Kingstown (Dún Laoghaire) in 1819, and today Irish Ferries and Stena Line still sail from the port to Dublin, making it the UK's second-busiest passenger ferry port after Dover.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Holyhead's history is built on a breakwater and a ferry route, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of Anglesey and the UK.
