Queensgate Market: a market hall with a listed roof
Huddersfield's older Victorian market hall — once home to stallholders including Woods, described in local archive records as the town's largest sweet shop of its day — was demolished as part of a 1960s and 1970s redevelopment of the town centre. In its place came Queensgate Market, opened with 187 stalls arranged around columns rising into an unusual hyperbolic paraboloid concrete roof, designed by architect Gwyn Roberts for the J Seymour Harris Partnership. It was Grade II listed in 2005, with Historic England calling it one of the best surviving examples of a 1960s or '70s retail market anywhere in the country.
It's a genuinely unusual building to still be trading as a working market — most examples of this kind of Brutalist-adjacent civic architecture were torn down decades ago. But the stalls inside are still built the traditional way: a counter, a scoop, and sweets sold by the quarter, not the bulk bag.
