Innerleithen owes its fame not to a battle or a castle, but to a spring of sulphurous water — and to a novel that turned that water into a Victorian sensation.
A spa built on St Ronan's Wells
When the poet Robert Burns visited Innerleithen in May 1787 he described it as a "famous spa". The town's sulphurous springs, known as St Ronan's Wells, had already acquired a reputation for healing, drawing visitors to take the waters.
The novel that made the name
Sir Walter Scott's 1824 novel St Ronan's Well was set in a fictionalised Borders spa town widely associated with Innerleithen, and its popularity turned the real town into a fashionable Victorian destination. Locals later founded the St Ronan's Border Club with other literary and sporting figures, and the St Ronan's Border Games it inspired, first held in September 1827, still run today.
