Irvinestown was founded during the Plantation of Ulster as Lowtherstown, and today the small Fermanagh town is known both for Necarne Castle and for holding the largest group of Second World War air force graves anywhere in Northern Ireland.
From Lowtherstown to Irvinestown
Before the Plantation, the area was known in Irish as Na Caorthann, "the rowans." The village was founded in 1618 by Scottish planter Sir Gerald Lowther, who gave it the name Lowtherstown and built a castle on the site now known as Necarne Castle. The settlement was sold to the Irvine family in 1667, though it didn't take their name until the early 19th century.
Seventy-four airmen, laid to rest together
Irvinestown's Church of Ireland churchyard holds the final resting place of 74 young airmen from across the Commonwealth, the largest single group of Second World War air force dead anywhere in Northern Ireland — a legacy of the RAF airfields that operated around the town during the war.
