Johnshaven is a small Mearns fishing village whose harbour had to be built twice before the North Sea was properly kept out, and whose old lifeboat house now tells that story as a heritage museum.
A fishing fleet, a decline, and a sailcloth recovery
Johnshaven was an active fishing port from an early date, with 26 boats and more than 130 fishermen recorded in 1722. Its fortunes fell later that century, partly after a fishing disaster and partly due to Royal Navy press gangs thinning the fleet's crews. A sailcloth works set up in 1790 helped the village recover, and flax processing and sailmaking became as central to Johnshaven's economy as fishing itself.
A harbour built twice, and a lifeboat since 1891
For much of its history Johnshaven had no proper harbour at all — an 1847 account describes only an inlet protected by high-water rocks. The first enclosed harbour wasn't built until 1871, and it was extended in 1884 with a breach in the southern breakwater to create a sheltered inner basin. The surrounding rocks still make the entrance hazardous in rough weather, which is partly why a lifeboat station was established in 1891; its original lifeboat house is now the Johnshaven Heritage Museum, and the village still holds a Fish Festival each August.
