Johnstone is one of Renfrewshire's planned towns, and its growth from a handful of residents to a thriving mill town happened within a single lifetime.
Laid out by a laird in 1782
Johnstone was first envisioned by John Houston, laird of the nearby Easter Cochrane estate, who set out an initial plan of five streets and a place of worship — the building that would become Johnstone High Parish Church.
From ten residents to thousands within decades
When the land was first leased in 1781 it had only around ten inhabitants. By 1792 that had risen to 1,434, by 1811 to 3,647, and by 1831 to 5,617 — growth driven largely by a six-storey cotton mill built in 1782, one of the largest in Scotland at the time.
Sweets still arrive the same way as everywhere else
Johnstone's history is built on planned streets and cotton mills, not confectionery — so pick 'n' mix, bulk bags and trade cases for the town come by delivery, the same as the rest of Renfrewshire and the UK.
