Three towns in one, built on planning
King William I granted the lands of Strathisla to the Abbey of Kinloss around 1177, but the Keith known today owes more to the 1750s, when the Earl of Findlater rebuilt Old Keith by laying out New Keith on moorland to the east, around a large central square. The town that resulted combines three separate communities — Old Town, New Keith and Fife Keith — and the 1770 Union Bridge still crosses a pool once known as the Gaun's Pot, where witches were reportedly drowned.
A distillery that never stopped
Strathisla distillery was founded as the Milltown distillery in 1786 by George Taylor and Alexander Milne, named for the Strathisla River that flows past it. It's recognised as the oldest continuously operating distillery in the Scottish Highlands, surviving a serious fire in 1879 and several changes of ownership before becoming the headquarters of Chivas Brothers, maker of Chivas Regal, in 1950. Keith is also home to two further working distilleries, Strathmill and Glen Keith, and the Keith and Dufftown Railway now runs the old 'whisky line' as an 11-mile heritage route.
