Kelso exists because of an abbey: the town came into being as a direct result of Kelso Abbey, founded by King David I of Scotland in 1128, on the banks of the River Tweed.
An abbey that became one of Scotland's most powerful
Completed in the mid-13th century, Kelso Abbey grew into one of the most powerful in Scotland before English raids reduced it to ruins in 1545. The fragments that remain are still regarded as a superb piece of architecture, and the abbey was presented to the nation in 1919.
A bridge that caused a riot
Rennie's Bridge over the Tweed was completed in 1803 to replace one washed away in the floods of 1797. Its designer, John Rennie, later built Waterloo Bridge in London, and the tolls charged to cross it led to local rioting in 1854.
