The Auld Grey Town that fuelled Everest
Kendal earned its nickname, the "Auld Grey Town", from the local limestone used to build much of the town centre. But its best-known export is edible: Kendal Mint Cake, first made in 1869 by confectioner Joseph Wiper, according to local tradition from a batch of glacier mints that set cloudy rather than clear. The mint cake went on to genuine polar and mountaineering fame, carried on Shackleton's Antarctic expedition and, on 29 May 1953, to the summit of Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.
