Kilsyth's quiet countryside was once the setting for the largest battle ever fought on Scottish soil during the Civil Wars.
Scotland's largest Civil War battle
The Battle of Kilsyth, fought on 15 August 1645, pitted the Royalist army of James Graham, Marquess of Montrose, against the Covenanter army of William Baillie. It's recognised as the largest battle fought within Scotland during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, and a crushing defeat for the Covenanters, who lost more than half their force.
Montrose's last victory, fought in enclosed ground
Kilsyth was also unusual for its terrain: a rare example of a 17th-century battle fought across substantially enclosed ground rather than the open fields armies usually chose. It proved to be Montrose's final victory for the Royalist cause before his defeat at Philiphaugh soon after.
