Kinghorn sits on the north shore of the Firth of Forth, opposite Edinburgh, and is remembered above all for one night in 1286 when a king's fall from his horse changed the course of Scottish history.
The night a golden age ended
Riding back to Kinghorn Castle after a council meeting in Edinburgh, King Alexander III is believed to have been thrown from his horse on the cliffs and killed; his body was found the next morning partway down the escarpment. A monument now stands near the spot, unveiled in 1887. Historians often mark his death as the end of a golden age in Scotland, triggering the succession crisis that led to the Wars of Independence.
Nearly 800 years as a Royal Burgh
Kinghorn held Royal Burgh status for close to 800 years, from a 12th-century charter consolidated in 1285 when Alexander III himself granted the town a weekly market, until local government reorganisation in the 1970s. Its later wealth came from the sea: Pettycur Harbour, built in the 1760s, became the main ferry crossing from Edinburgh into Fife for decades, before the opening of the Forth Railway Bridge in 1890 turned the town's sheltered bay into a seaside holiday destination instead.
