Kingsbridge was the birthplace, in 1705, of William Cookworthy, a Quaker chemist and pharmacist who went on to identify usable deposits of china clay (kaolin) in Cornwall and patent England's first true hard-paste porcelain in 1768 — a discovery that launched the English china industry. The town's Cookworthy Museum, housed in a former grammar school, is named in his honour.
