A market town since 1227
Kirkby Lonsdale has Roman origins and is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. Several packhorse routes converged on its crossing of the River Lune, and the town gained market town status by Royal Charter in 1227. The Grade I listed Devil's Bridge, a three-arch crossing over the Lune, dates from the 12th or 13th century and takes its name from a local legend.
The view that impressed Turner and Ruskin
The view of the River Lune and the Howgill Fells from St Mary's churchyard was painted by J. M. W. Turner in 1822, and in 1875 the critic John Ruskin described it as "one of the loveliest in England, therefore in the world" — it has been known as Ruskin's View ever since. The footpath was closed in 2021 due to erosion and partially reopened in August 2024.
