Kirriemuir is the birthplace of J.M. Barrie, the novelist and dramatist who created Peter Pan — a genuine literary landmark for a small Angus weaving town.
Born the ninth of ten children in a weaver's house
Barrie was born on 9 May 1860 at "The Tenements", 9 Brechin Road, the ninth of ten children in a family of linen weavers, then the town's main industry. The house is now preserved by the National Trust for Scotland as a museum, with the upper floors furnished as they may have looked in Barrie's childhood.
The wash-house that became Wendy's house
The wash-house outside the family home was Barrie's first "theatre" and is said to have given him the idea for Wendy's house in Peter Pan. Barrie never lost his connection to the town: when he died in 1937 he left instructions to be buried overlooking Kirriemuir, where a statue of Peter Pan now also stands in his memory.
