Lanark is home to around 8,900 people in South Lanarkshire, a royal burgh whose market has been trading since the 12th century.
A royal burgh since 1140
King David I made Lanark a royal burgh in 1140, laying out a market place and granting rent-free plots, known as burgages, to merchants who set up around it. An 1850s survey records weekly markets on Tuesday and Saturday, alongside handloom weaving, shoemaking and farming as the town's main trades. Lanark still functions as a market centre for the surrounding farmland, with a large livestock auction on its outskirts.
New Lanark, a mile down the river
A mile south of the town, New Lanark was founded in 1785 as a cotton-spinning village by David Dale, later run on unusually humane lines by the social reformer Robert Owen. The mills closed in 1968, but the village survives as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, drawing visitors who rarely venture the extra mile into Lanark itself.
Why Lanark shoppers order online anyway
A centuries-old market doesn't automatically mean a dedicated sweet shop with bulk bags, vegan ranges or halal-friendly lines, and Lanark doesn't have one. Ordering online covers the gap instead.
